Unleash Your Creativity

Using stencils for sugar cookies opens up a world of creative possibilities. Imagine intricate designs, festive patterns, or even personalized messages delicately imprinted on your sweet treats. There are many stencil options to choose from, including classic shapes and trendy themes. Let your imagination run wild!

From holidays to birthdays, or just a spontaneous baking session, stencils offer an easy way to add a touch of magic to your sugary delights.

Tip: I keep a stash of circle sugar cookies in my freezer for last-minute orders and use stencils to decorate them, it takes me no time at all!

PYO Cookies

Another fun way to use stencils is to create PYO cookies. PYO stand for "paint your own" and are a hit among kids! Basically, its a cookie coloring page.

Each PYO cookie typically includes a cookie with an image on it, a painting palette and a paint brush. Simply use your stencil to create an outline of an image on a cookie and thats basically it. The artist can then dip their paint brush into water and use their palette to create their work of art!

Cookie Stenciling Media

I believe I have tried every way to stencil a cookie. Generally, I think it's best to apply your stencil with the same type of frosting as the base of your cookie.

Royal Icing works well for stenciling as is air brushing. My absolute favorite medium is Rolled Buttercream.

Why I prefer to stencil on Rolled Butterceam:

  1. It's delicious.

  2. You can stencil your frosting before it's on your cookie.

No more wasted cookies from a stencil slip-up! You can watch my video below which shows you step by step how to stencil onto rolled buttercream cookies. I'm sure you will agree, it's easy peasy!

Effortlessly roll out your buttercream using a rolling pin that has thickness rings so it's easy to have a consistent thickness. This is the rolling pin I use, I use it every time I make cookies so it is definitely worth the small investment.

Materials:

Stencil of choice (I make my own but here's an option on amazon)

Batch of Rolled Buttercream (recipe here)

Food Coloring (if using)

Cookie Cutter (use the same shape as your cookie)

  1. Color your buttercream to your desired color.

  2. Place a sheet of Parchment Paper on your cookie sheet.

  3. Flatten the buttercream in your hands and then place it between two sheets of Parchment Paper on the Baking Sheet.

  4. Use your Rolling Pin (I use 1/8 inch thickness) to roll out the buttercream.

  5. Cut out the desired shapes with your cookie cutter.

  6. Place the Baking Sheet and cut-out shapes into the freezer for no more than 10 minutes.

  7. Take Baking Sheet out of the freezer, prep your stencil by LIGHTLY brushing Shortening on the back of your stencil (this will help it adhere to your buttercream and also help it release easily).

  8. Secure the stencil with your non-dominant hand and use your other hand to place a layer of thinned buttercream over the stencil.

  9. Immediately take your Scraper and use a "smooth out" mindset in scraping off the excess frosting.

  10. When you can see your stencil design and it is still covered by buttercream, this is when you've removed enough excess.

  11. Lift the stencil from both sides and gently lift up.

  12. Place the cookie sheet back in the freezer for a few minutes in order to firm-up the buttercream so you can transfer it onto your cookie.
