This Red Velvet Cookie Recipe was the recipe used in all of my 2025 Valentine Cookie Series on YouTube

There is just something that makes you feel special when you eat red velvet. It's not your everyday chocolate or vanilla, it's a special treat for sure. These cookies are delicious on their own or iced. I generally end up with a few disappearing before i can get the icing on them.

Sugar cookies are a favorite in my household and these red velvet cake mix cookies are a close runner up to my original vanilla sugar cookie.

These cookies are delicious with rolled buttercream which offers a luxurious pillow-soft icing and also pair well with royal icing. Another option is to simply dust with powdered sugar or drizzle a powdered sugar glaze. The options are truly endless.

Recipe Ingredients:

  • 1 box Duncan Hines Red Velvet Cake Mix

  • 8 oz cream cheese (softened)

  • 4 oz butter (softened)

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. In a mixing bowl, cream the softened cream cheese and butter together for 1-2 minutes until smooth and fluffy.

  3. Gradually add the red velvet cake mix, mixing until fully combined.

  4. Roll out the dough on parchment paper to your desired thickness (I recommend about 1/4 inch for the perfect cookie).

  5. Use your favorite cookie cutters to cut out shapes and transfer them to the prepared baking sheet.

  6. Bake for 9-12 minutes, or until the cookies are no longer shiny on top.

  7. Let them cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe:

  • No chilling required: Save time without sacrificing flavor or texture.

  • Perfect for cut-outs: The dough holds its shape beautifully, making it ideal for intricate designs.

  • Versatile for any occasion: While perfect for Valentine's Day, these cookies can easily be adapted for any holiday or celebration.

  • Rich and unique flavor: The pairing of red velvet’s mild cocoa notes with tangy cream cheese creates a taste that’s unforgettable.

Pro Tips:

  • Roll the dough between two sheets of parchment paper to prevent sticking.

  • For consistent cookies, use a rolling pin with thickness guides.

  • Decorate with royal icing or rolled buttercream (both recipes are available on my blog!) for a professional-looking finish.

  • These cookies freeze well, so you can bake them ahead of time for stress-free entertaining.

  4. Weddings or Bridal Showers: Match the theme with sophisticated shapes and colors.

  5. Baby Showers: Decorate in pastel hues to celebrate a new arrival.

  6. Birthdays: Customize the shapes and decorations to suit any theme.

  7. 4th of July: Add patriotic red, white, and blue details.

  8. Halloween: Use spooky cutters like bats or pumpkins with black and orange accents.

  9. Thanksgiving: Create fall-themed designs like leaves or turkeys.

  10. Mother’s or Father’s Day: Bake personalized cookies to show your love and appreciation.

Customization Ideas:

  • Flavor Variations: Mix in mini chocolate chips, white chocolate chunks, or chopped nuts for added texture.

  • Color Variations: Use gel food coloring to enhance or alter the red hue to match your occasion.

  • Frosting Options: Pair with royal icing, rolled buttercream, or a simple powdered sugar glaze for added flair.

Storage Tips:

  • Make-Ahead Dough: Store the dough in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.

  • Storing Baked Cookies: Keep cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, or freeze for longer storage.

Cookie Decorating Tips:

  • For clean edges, wipe your cookie cutters with a damp cloth between cuts.

  • Use royal icing for intricate designs or rolled buttercream for a smooth, elegant finish.

  • Add sprinkles, edible glitter, or piping details to elevate your cookies.

Kitchen Tools You’ll Need:

  • Parchment paper for rolling and baking.

  • A stand mixer or hand mixer for blending ingredients evenly.

  • Rolling pin with thickness guides for consistent cookies.

  • Assorted cookie cutters to match the occasion.

  • Baking sheets and a wire cooling rack.

Troubleshooting Tips:

  • Why cookies might spread: Ensure your butter and cream cheese are softened but not too warm. If the dough feels too soft, a quick 10-minute chill can help.

  • Preventing sticky dough: Lightly flour your parchment paper or rolling pin, just dust off any excess before baking as the flour will likely be visible still after baking.

  • Even baking: Never use a warm cookie sheet, your cookies will start cooking and spreading before hitting the oven, this can cause spreading.

  • Bake Time: bake time will vary with each oven. Personally, my oven bakes hotter the longer it's on so make sure you start checking each batch of cookies at the 8-9 minute mark.

Pairing Suggestions:

  • Toppings: Top with a dusting of powdered sugar, royal icing or rolled buttercream. They are delicious without any topping as well!

  • Beverages: These cookies are delightful with a glass of milk, a steaming cup of coffee, or rich hot cocoa.

  • Desserts: Pair with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of chocolate sauce for an indulgent dessert.

FAQs:

  • Can I use a different cake mix flavor? Absolutely! Try chocolate, vanilla, or even strawberry for a twist. Lemon is one of our favorites too!

  • Can I make these cookies gluten-free? Yes, substitute with a gluten-free cake mix.

  • What’s the best way to roll out sticky dough? Use parchment paper and a lightly floured rolling pin for smooth handling.
