Get Your Spook On: Groovy Retro Halloween Cookie Ideas

How to create trending Halloween cookie ideas?

Halloween is creeping up, and I've got something spooky special that’s oozing with charm and sass! This year, I’ve whipped up a Halloween cookie set that’s not just about pumpkins and ghosts—though, of course, they’re here too, decked out in the trendiest styles. This set is where 70’s retro meets spooky season, with a vibrant splash of orange and pink, because who says Halloween can’t be fabulous?

Retro Halloween Vibe

Imagine this: A disco pumpkin groovin' under the moonlight, a desert animal skull giving off major rustic vibes, and a cowgirl who had a little too much fun and ended up upside down in a cauldron. If that doesn’t scream Halloween with a twist, I don’t know what does!

Oh, and did I mention the adorable ghosts? One's rocking a pair of flower sunglasses, while another decided a cowgirl hat was the accessory of the season. We’ve also got a groovy horseshoe with 70’s flowers and a cobweb spun intricately inside it, perfect for those who love a little extra detail.

These Halloween cookie ideas came from a few different places. This year we've already seen that ghosts are the big thing this Halloween, especially ghosts wearing accessories! Pairing the popular color-combo of pink and orange, the retro disco theme and including the current Halloween ghost craze, makes this Halloween set over the top!

This set isn’t just about looking good—it’s about standing out. With its retro vibes and unexpected elements, these cookies are bound to be the star of any Halloween party.

Royal Icing Transfers

Now, let's talk technique. I created this set using royal icing transfers, which are the best-kept secret for creating detailed, delicate designs without the stress of piping directly onto the cookie. You can make them ahead of time, using up those last bits of frosting that always seem to hang around. Whether you’re dealing with leftovers from another project or raiding your freezer stash, transfers are a great way to put every last drop of icing to good use.

And the best part? You don’t need to mix up a whole rainbow of colors. Keep it simple by making the transfers in white, then bring them to life with a bit of food color gel and a paintbrush. It’s like magic—only edible!

Of course, I couldn't help myself but to stencil the background with my new airbrush! And I love it, by the way, it runs like a champ and the stream is perfect for cookie decorating! I used a variety of stencils including, stars, hearts and a checkered print. I used a pearl color on the orange cookies and a neon pink on the light pink cookies.
